June 1949 – A special training centre, the centre de perfectionemont commando, had been established by the EMO-THGP general staff airborne troops at Vung Tau in southern Vietnam. Its role was to train hill tribesmen including those of the Hmong, Mois and Nung as intel agents, saboteurs and radio operators for deployment in areas controlled by the Viet Minh. .

17 Oct 1950 – The Communists launched a major assault on the line of French posts along northern Vietnam’s border with China and connected by a highway, designated RC4 which stretched between Cao Bang and Tien Yen. By 17 Oct 1950 all of these, including the key fort at Langson, had been lost. The French had suffered heavy casualties losing 6,000 troops and huge amount of arms and equipment, later estimated as being enough to equip a Vietminh division of 10,000 men.
